Queremos homens completos ou meros cidadãos?

A educação actual e as actuais conveniências sociais premeiam o cidadão e imolam o homem.

Nas condições modernas, os seres humanos vêm a ser identificados com as suas capacidades socialmente valiosas.

A existência do resto da personalidade ou é ignorada ou, se admitida, é admitida somente para ser deplorada, reprimida ou, se a repressão falhar, sub-repticiamente rebuscada.

Sobre todas as tendências humanas que não conduzem à boa cidadania, a moralidade e a tradição social pronunciam uma sentença de banimento.

Três quartas partes do Homem são proscritas. O proscrito vive revoltado e comete vinganças estranhas. Quando os homens são criados para serem cidadãos e nada mais, tornam-se, primeiro, em homens imperfeitos e depois em homens indesejáveis.

A insistência nas qualidades socialmente valiosas da personalidade, com exclusão de todas as outras, derrota finalmente os seus próprios fins.

O actual desassossego, descontentamento e incerteza de propósitos testemunham a veracidade disto.

Tentámos fazer homens bons cidadãos de estados industriais altamente organizados: só conseguimos produzir uma colheita de especialistas, cujo descontentamento em não serem autorizados a ser homens completos faz deles cidadãos extremamente maus.

Há toda a razão para supor que o mundo se tornará ainda mais completamente tecnicizado, ainda mais complicadamente arregimentado do que é presentemente; que graus cada vez mais elevados de especialização serão requeridos dos homens e mulheres individuais.

O problema de reconciliar as reivindicações do homem e do cidadão tornar-se-á cada vez mais agudo.

A solução desse problema será uma das principais tarefas da educação futura.

Se irá ter êxito, e até mesmo se o êxito é possível, somente o evento poderá decidir.
