Os homens sábios, para declinarem a inveja que possa incidir sobre os seus méritos, usam atribuí-los à providência e à fortuna (sorte), porque assim podem falar deles, e, além disso, é honroso para o homem ser benquisto dos poderes superiores.

Assim Sylla  escolheu o cognome de Feliz e não o de Magno.

E tem sido notado, que  aqueles que demasiada-mente atribuem a sua felicidade à ciência e habilidade acabam infortunada-

mente. 

Está escrito que Timóteo, o ateniense, quando apresentara à assembleia o relatório da sua acção como governante, frequentemente intercalou a seguinte frase "e nisto não teve parte a fortuna", nunca mais prosperou em coisa que empreendesse.
