If we respected only what is inevitable and has a right to be, music and poetry would resound along the streets. 

When we are unhurried and wise, we perceive that only great and worthy things have any permanent and absolute existence, that petty fears and petty pleasures are but the shadow of the reality. 

This is always exhilarating and sublime. By closing the eyes and slumbering, and consenting to be deceived by shows, men establish and confirm their daily life of routine and habit everywhere, which still is built on purely illusory foundations. 

Children, who play life, discern its true law and relations more clearly than men, who fail to live it worthily, but who think that they are wiser by experience, that is, by failure.

Os homens não se agrupam fraternitariamente senão por oposição. 

Sempre nos unimos para nos opormos. 

Isto é, aliás, um princípio lógico: definir é limitar.

Assim como o egoísmo e a vaidade são as qualidades determinantes da vida humana, pois o homem só deveras age para seu proveito ou para suplantar os outros, sendo a guerra a essência de toda a vida (o que já Heráclito tinha dito), assim o egoísmo e a vaidade são as qualidades determinantes dos egoísmos espontâneos chamados nações.

1. Composta de homens, a sociedade, seja ela em sua essência o que for, manifestará forçosamente as mesmas qualidades que esses homens. 

Em outras palavras, os homens em conjunto manifestarão as mesmas qualidades que manifestam individualmente, tirantes aquelas qualidades que estão ligadas à existência de um organismo físico, o instinto da conservação, o de reprodução, e em derivação deste segundo, o instinto de família (directa ou indirecta).

2. As qualidades puramente sociais que governam os homens são o egoísmo, a socialidade e a vaidade. 

Por socialidade entendo o instinto gregário; é ela que ameniza e limita, sem nunca o eliminar nem essencialmente o alterar, o egoísmo, qualidade primária, que se deriva da própria circunstância de haver um ego. 

A vaidade é a consequência do egoísmo na sua limitação pela socialidade; é a qualidade social humana mais evidente. 

Todo o homem quer ser mais que outro, todo o homem quer brilhar. Variam, com as índoles e as aptidões, as maneiras em que o homem quer destacar‑se, mas cada um tem a sua vaidade.

3. Seria impossível a existência da sociedade se nela se não reproduzissem estes fenómenos da vida do indivíduo.

Por isso a sociedade se divide em nações, e não é possível `humanidade´ em matéria social.

Assim como tem que haver um egoísmo individual, tem que haver um egoísmo colectivo, é o que se chama o instinto patriótico. 

Assim como há uma vaidade individual, tem que haver uma vaidade colectiva, é o que se chama imperialismo. 

Só não há uma socialidade colectiva...
